The BIG Stuff
Figure AI shows off Figure 01 (robot) + GPT-4V + voice
Once again, we have this out to The Memo readers within just a few hours of announcement.
If it seems like only last week that there was a special edition of The Memo, you’re right! Last Monday we had the Claude 3 Opus model release, still outperforming GPT-4 and Gemini across diverse benchmarks.
This morning (Australian time) we have this major video announcement from Figure AI, a robotics company with recent US$675M investment from OpenAI (29/Feb/2024). This is the missing piece of the puzzle, having large language models embodied in a humanoid robot (or similar, as AI adapts the ‘perfect’ or optimal embodiment form, outside of our limited view of biology).
Figure AI today said:
OpenAI models provide high-level visual and language intelligence. Figure neural networks deliver fast, low-level, dexterous robot actions. Everything in this video is a neural network.
Watch the video (link); note that it is in realtime and autonomous (not pre-programmed):

Today’s advancement moved my conservative AGI countdown from 71% ➜ 72%. Many people would argue that Figure’s announcement instead brings us much closer to 100% as it already meets the broader and simpler definition of artificial general intelligence: ‘a machine that performs at the level of an average (median) human.’

And we’re only 2½ months through 2024 so far… Get ready for the next big releases. My Dec/2023 AI report spelled out some of the next steps:

OpenAI was one of many investors in the $675 M investment round and contributed only $5 M. “OpenAI, a ChatGPT-maker and an early supporter of Figure AI, is investing $5 million, having previously considered acquiring the startup”. So where does this leave the 1x.tech's EVO and NEO robots? They're also funded by OpenAI (and Microsoft I believe).
It would be interesting to have an overview over what needs to be accomplished in order for the "Countdown to AGI" to reach 100%.
