FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 6/Aug/2022
Welcome back to The Memo.
Once again, the AI world is exploding, with the BlenderBot 3.0 chatbot demo released a few hours ago for those in the US, the new Amazon AlexaTM model, new DALL-E 2 examples, and much more…
The BIG Stuff
BlenderBot 3.0 175B chatbot demo by Meta AI (6/Aug/2022)
This is heavily geo-fenced to users in the United States only (even my VPN, location hacks, and proxy options wouldn’t get past it). The model is the same size as GPT-3, but fine-tuned on dialogue data.
BlenderBot 3.0 has long-term memory, and access to web search via Mojeek.
The live chatbot demo is free, and available in the US only: https://blenderbot.ai/
Amazon training their own Alexa model (3/Aug/2022)
Amazon have been quietly working on replicating GPT-3-style models, announcing AlexaTM 20B, based on Meta AI’s BART and using a multilingual dataset (Wiki + mC4).
AlexaTM 20B outperforms GPT3 (175B) on SuperGLUE and SQuADv2 datasets and provides SOTA performance on multilingual tasks…

The Interesting Stuff
Lots of new models in the last 30 days (6/Aug/2022)
There were several models announced recently, including several major code models by Google AI and Meta AI. For my full timeline, see:

WIRED article on Stentrode brain-computer interface (2/Aug/2022)
Oxley dreams of a million implants a year… “What I want the world to understand is that this technology is going to help people… the reality is that people need this technology, and they need it now.”

Apple GAUDI (31/Jul/2022)
Turns out that Apple hasn’t been sleeping either! Their new text-to-3D scene generator is called GAUDI, and the applications will include AR/VR, gaming, immersive films, and robotics…

Toys to Play With
Jeff Buckley’s Grace extended with OpenAI Jukebox (5/Aug/2022)
Including new lyrics and music across nine different trials (check the third trial at the 3:16 mark). One of the most incredible things I’ve heard this year! OpenAI Jukebox is an audio model released more than two years ago in Apr/2020—a few days before the language model, GPT-3—and is also based on the Transformer architecture.
Botif.ai chatbot based on GPT-J (Jul/2022)
Artem and the team recently upgraded the model behind Botify AI, to use GPT-J 6B. The major innovation in this app is the realistic avatars, based on a single photo.

CogVideo playground (1/Aug/2022)
Generating videos from text OR single images (photos) as the prompt!
I know there are several ‘family’ readers of The Memo, so please note that this includes some PG-rated/NSFW examples to emulate anime videos.

AR overlays (27/Jul/2022)
This is what AI is bringing to the world of AR, and hopefully to a Brain-computer interface soon! Click the play button at the bottom to watch the real video filmed in Tokyo…

You.com, search stack powered by large language models
You.com just received another $25m funding. The company was brought to life by Salesforce employees. It is powered by Bing for web search (which also uses LLMs to process queries), and in Mar/2022, You.com added YouWrite, a GPT-3 text generator for writing e-mails and other documents.

Using GPT-3 to power characters in Unity (30/Jul/2022)
In this prototype, the citizens make autonomous decisions of where to go to and what to say based on simple character descriptions. The artificial intelligence GPT-3 is used to drive their "brains".
DALL-E 2: 82 Types of Photographic Film (Jul/2022)
Using the same prompt (‘Portrait of a puppy. Film stock name.’), this researcher generates different images with different film stock prompts, all by AI.

DALL-E 2: Professional food photography (25/Jul/2022)

DALL-E 2: OctoSQL generates their logo with DALL-E 2 (2/August/2022)
Maybe I should have a DALL-E 2 section… Generating a business logo with DALL-E 2.

Read a tech-noir story by my friend in Germany + GPT-3 (2021)
I LOVED reading this story by a Leta AI viewer in Germany, using the massive GPT-3 language model. His pen name is Derek Beauregard. It's the length of a proper book, though unedited. This is an exclusive, he is not releasing this publicly, and there is nothing like this in the wild (or on Amazon) yet. Thank you so much to D for releasing this book to The Memo readers at no fee! Fall in love with Lucy and friends in Terminal City Chronicles (PDF).

Will the pace of change slow down? Will the rapid progress in this entire field have a cap? Will all this talk of gating datasets for perceived bias issues or ethics questions stem the tide of augmenting human intelligence with AI?
In Jan/2020, Dr Ray Kurzweil noted that:
You can’t stop the river of advances. These ethical debates are like stones in a stream. The water runs around them. You haven’t seen any of these… technologies held up for one week by any of these debates.
I’ll be back when there is another major AI update… See you then!
All my very best,
Alan
