Subject: The Memo - AI that matters, as it happens, in plain English
AGI: 95%
ASI: 0/50 (no expected movement until post-AGI)

Prof Aleksander Mądry, OpenAI (4/Aug/2025, translated):
’For AGI, all key scientific breakthroughs have already been made. For ASI, something is still missing… By the end of 2026, AI will start to penetrate visibly into all sectors of the economy. By then, we may be able to declare that we have reached AGI…’

There was an additional winner of The Who Moved My Cheese? AI Awards! for Oct/2025. Director Guillermo del Toro said: “AI, particularly generative AI – I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested… I’m 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak… The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I’d rather die.’”

Anthropic: Expanding our use of Google Cloud TPUs and services (23/Oct/2025)

Sidenote: I had written off Anthropic as an ‘also-ran’ due to their compute issues. However, I think this deal is big enough to include here…

Anthropic has announced a substantial expansion in its use of Google Cloud technologies, planning to leverage up to one million TPUs. This strategic move, valued at tens of billions of dollars, is set to increase Anthropic’s computational capacity significantly, enabling more robust AI research and product development. This expansion will help meet the growing demands of over 300,000 business customers. Anthropic has diversified its compute strategy across Google TPUs, Amazon Trainium, and NVIDIA GPUs.

Sidenote: Google’s new TPU v6 count for 2025 is 2.1M TPUs, so this deal makes up roughly half of all new TPUs for the year: https://lifearchitect.ai/viz/#gpus

Wall Street bank BNY has over 100 ‘digital employees’ (17/Oct/2025)

This one is really big. In fact, I’ve been waiting for this for years (and showcased this possibility 2½ years ago in a video about office productivity from 3/Mar/2023). I understand that this is the first time a large organization has publicly acknowledged such a broad use of internal human-like agentic AI systems. It dovetails nicely with Microsoft’s new and evolving licensing conditions based on ‘per agent’ rather than ‘per (human) seat’, as outlined in the Policy section in this edition.

They have performance reviews. Human managers. Email addresses. Logins. But they’re not human.

Bank of New York Mellon (BNY, wiki) has integrated over 100 digital employees into its workforce [in Feb/2025 they’d built 13 simpler agents using Microsoft AutoGen], demonstrating one of the most ambitious AI strategies on Wall Street. These digital employees, described as bundles of AI agents, perform tasks ranging from payment remediation to code repair, all while having performance reviews, email addresses, and logins akin to human employees.

BNY’s site says:

We have built, onboarded and deployed over 100 digital employees with distinct personas, credentials and supervisors to automate routine tasks. By putting AI in the hands of everyone at BNY, we intend to develop fluency and create capacity for our people to focus on higher-value work.
